On Wednesday the 29th of May and Thursday the 30th May, V Swans held the annual Hedland Cup where students from our Kicking Goals, Shooting Goals and Shooting Hoops classes are picked to go on an incentive trip to play netball and football in Hedland. We took away 75 students, making up 2 football teams and 4 netball teams. The students represented Newman SHS and competed against other schools from the Pilbara such as; Port Hedland, Karratha, St Luke’s and Tom Price.

The students qualified for this trip by showing good behaviour in all classes, being up to date with assessments, and maintaining high uniform compliance in Kicking Goals, Shooting Goals and Shooting Hoops classes.

All of our Netball teams put in a great effort with 3 out of 4 of them making it into the semi finals to compete for a spot in the grand final. The Division 1 year 9/10 team came out on top in their semi finals and ended up versing Karratha in the grand final, the girls put up a good fight but ended up in second place after an entertaining game.

Best and Fairest players for each netball division were:

  • Div 1 Year 7/8: Allie Malins
  • Div 2 Year 7/8: Lily Mitchell
  • Div 1 Year 9/10: Nikki-Lee Rasmussen
  • Div 2 Year 9/10: Peyton Birt

We are very proud of the efforts of our football teams. The Year 7/8’s improved substantially on last years performance which was pleasing given the number of players who were playing in their first Hedland Cup. Our Year 9/10’s were extremely competitive, unfortunately didn't post a win but were ahead in all three games at different stages and played some good team footy.

Best and Fairest players for footy were:

  • Year 7/8 : Jobe Bakes
  • Year 9/10: Lachlan Harrison

All of the feedback from our coaches was positive, and they really enjoyed seeing the players develop both on and off the field/court.

Thank you to all the students that were involved, your behaviour on this trip was a credit to both Newman SHS and the Kicking Goals, Shooting Goals and Shooting Hoops Programs.

We would like to thank Mr Yarnold, Miss Hampel and Miss Bartel, as well as Lauren Taylor, Matt Lorne, Kelly Kendrick and Mick Kendrick, for volunteering their time to help on the camp. Your efforts and input enhanced the experience for the students who went on the trip.
