Ten Kicking Goals students from Newman had the opportunity to be part of the Kicking Goals Perth Incentive Trip on the 9 - 12 August. They qualified for this trip by showing consistently good behaviour in class, being up to date with assessments, maintaining high uniform compliance in Kicking Goals classes as well as volunteering a number of hours in the Newman community, including KickIT coaching, boundary umpiring and work with other sporting groups

The trip was a reward for the high standards these students have set, both at school and in the community. On the trip the students had the opportunity to be involved in a number of activities, including;  a tour of the West Coast Eagles brand new base at Mineral Resource Park, a tour of Swan Districts Football Club, A tenpin bowlingh challenge, a MasterChef Challenge, as well as playing a Curtain Raiser on  Optus Stadium, and watching an AFL match live. A lot of activity fit into three days!

We are very proud of the efforts and conduct of all the students who went on the trip, we received very complimentary feedback about how our students represented themselves, the Kicking Goals program, and Newman SHS.

The Curtain Raiser match saw our students combine with 7 Kicking Goals Students from Hedland SHS to play the Naitanui Academy. This year was the first time we have been able to coordinate all of our tour activities to match the Hedland program, and this led to a real team bonding and spirit by the time we played the game. The Kicking Goals team took it right up to the Naitanui Academy, going into quarter time with the lead and being right in the contest until late in the final quarter when the Academy pulled away to get the win.

Some of the many highlights of the trip included:

  • Being the first tour group to see the new and magnificent WCE facility at Mineral Resources Park. The students were amazed by the tour, getting to see the state of the art facilities that the players and coaches get to use, including a massive gym area, a studio for recording podcasts and video content, indoor pools and coaching rooms, and a turf indoor facility nearly as big as Goanna Oval!
  • Seeing the students step up in the Masterchef Challenge, all four dishes were quality, and it was really hard for the judges to pick a winner.
  • Playing on Optus Stadium, and watching an AFL match live. For many of our students, this was the first time they had been to an AFL match, and played on an AFL ground!

We would like to congratulate the following people who won awards on the trip:

  • Logan Bilich and Tom Lake - for being awarded Best on Tour for Newman by their peers
  • Miss Hampel and Justin Dorey - For being the winners of the prestigious 'Tool of the Day' awards. We would love to share what they did to win the awards, but 'what happens on tour, stays on tour'

I would like to thank Miss Hampel and Mr Yarnold for their help on the camp, the trip would not have gone as smoothly without their assistance.

A big thankyou to Major Partner BHP for their ongoing support of Kicking Goals Program, your support enables us to give students these memorable experiences

For all students in the Kicking and Shooting Goals programs, the Perth Incentive trips are a reward for sustained effort and high standards. For those in the Kicking Goals Program in 2020, we look forward to next year’s trip!
